Cold winds sweep north India; Rain likely from Monday: Met Dept

New Delhi, Jan 25 (UNI) Icy winds swept north India on Saturday, dipping the mercury at several places.

Karnal in Haryana recorded a low of 2.5 degrees Celsius.

After passing over snow-capped peaks in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the winds were reaching the region, making the people shiver, India Meteorological Department said.

Chandigarh, the capital city of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a low of 6.2 deg C, a fall from Friday`s 7.7 degrees.

In Punjab, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their respective lows at 6.4 deg, 4.3 deg and 4.7 deg C.

In Haryana, Hisar, Rohtak and Ambala registered their respective minimum at 3.5 degrees, 3.8 degrees, while Narnaul saw a low of 3 degrees and Bhiwani 6.9 degrees C.

Showers are forecast for the region on Monday and Tuesday.

The U.S. President will be accorded a grand welcome when he lands in Ahmedabad in Gujarat a little before noon on Monday with the ``Namaste Trump' show at the newly constructed Motera stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world which can accommodate nearly 125,000 people. The event is planned on a much bigger scale than ``Howdy Modi' which was held in the U.S. during Mr Modi's visit last year.
