CME in Hepatology held at JIPMER

Puducherry,Jan 23(UNI)The Department of Medical Gastroenterology,JIPMER here today organized a CME in Hepatology.
According to a Jipmer release here today,as JIPMER is gearing towards starting Liver transplantation soon, this educational meeting, focused on common and widely prevalent liver disorders seems to fulfill the need of the hour.Chronic alcoholism is widely prevalent in our community and tops the list of causes for chronic liver disease and portal hypertension. Alcoholic hepatitis, an acute alcohol related liver injury when severe is associated with increased risk of mortality. There have been recent developments in the evaluation and management of this condition,the release said. Hepatitis B virus infection remains a global public health problem despite the availability of both vaccines and treatment options especially in countries which face a number of infectious diseases and in which infection protection measures may lack. India has a carrier rate of approximately 3.0%. They are at risk of serious illness and death, mainly from liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Another liver infection which has been in focus over the last few years is Chronic Hepatitis C. with the advent of newer Directly acting antiviral drugs, hepatitis C and cure seems to be an achievable goal. Three of these drugs have been launched in India in 2015 at a price affordable to many Hepatitis C patients. The CME had been planned so as to focus on these three important issues in Hepatology. Senior and eminent Faculties in the field of Hepatology like Dr. Abraham Koshy from Lake Shore Hospitals, Cochin, Dr. George Kurian from PIMS, Puducherry, DrVenkatakrishnan from PSG Hospitals Coimbatore had attended the conference and delivered lectures.
