CM Lal Thanhawla files nomination papers for Serchip, Champhai South constituencies

Aizawl, Nov 8 (UNI) After he had to cancel filing his nomination papers for Serchip assembly segment on Tuesday, Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla on Thursday filed his nomination to contest both Serchhip seat and the remote Champhai South constituency.
According to Congress sources in Mizoram capital, his representatives filed his nominations on his behalf before Serchip district deputy commissioner Sangchin Chinzah for the prestigious Serchip seat.
On Tuesday, Mr Lal Thanhawla had gone to Serchip to file his nomination papers but a massive crowd had gathered at the venue and requested him not to do so still the civil society's demand for replacing S S Shashank was materialised. "Chief Minister has respected people's sentiment and did not file his nomination," a source had said.
Mr Lal Thanhawla, who has been CM of Mizoram from 1988 to 1998 and from 2008 to 2018, had gone to Chamhhai on Tuesday for campaigning and himself personally filed his nomination papers on Thursday.
Chief Minister filed his nomination papers before Champhai district deputy commissioner Naveen Agrawal for Champhai South seat, a source said.
He is pitted against lawyer T J Lalnuntluanga of the MNF and C. Lalremliana of the ZPM, both first timers in Champhai South seat.
Five time Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla faces a six-cornered contest in his home turf of Serchip.
New floated Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), a coalition of regional parties, has fielded their chief ministerial candidate and a former Lok Sabha MP Lalduhoma, Mizo National Front (MNF) nominee C. Lalramzauva, a senior advocate and People's Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) party chief Vanlalruata are also in the fray among others.
NPP candidate from the seat will be Kapliana Pachuau, a local journalist and editor of local daily Serchip Times.
Mr Lal Thanhawla first won the Serchip seat in 1984 and is regarded as a strongman there but he also lost it once in 1998.
