CLP India’s Jhajjar Power Limited is the cleanest domestic coal-fired power plant in NCR

CLP India’s Jhajjar Power Limited is the cleanest domestic coal-fired power plant in NCR

Kolkata, Nov 25 (UNI) Jhajjar Power Limited (JPL), a subsidiary of CLP India, is the first and only plant in the National Capital Region to have installed Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) technology with the objective of reducing air pollution and contributing to a healthy environment around the plant and its nearby regions.

FGD is an advanced cleaner technology that reduces the emission of sulphur dioxide (SO2), which has negative health impact. With FGD in full load operation, JPL has reduced its SO2 emission by Rs85%.

Rising air pollution in the north-western regions of India, especially Delhi-NCR, has become a serious problem in recent years. To tackle this issue, India’s environment ministry had notified new environmental norms in 2015, wherein it directed all thermal power plants to adopt FGD. Even before these regulations came into effect, CLP India had, during the construction of the plant in 2012, decided to install FGD.

The emission control system became fully operational in February 2019. Other clean technologies adopted by JPL also reduce NOX and Particulate Matter (PM) at source.

Commenting on the initiative, Rajiv Rajan Mishra, Managing Director, CLP India, said, “CLP India’s JPL is among the most modern and cleanest thermal power plants in India. The technologies adopted at the time of its construction are now gradually being implemented across other plants in the sector to comply with the new emission norms. We are proud to be the early adopters of FGD in India – one of the critical technologies used to control air pollution. Guided by CLP Group’s Climate Vision 2050 carbon intensity targets and CDPQ’s investment strategy to address climate change, we will continue to focus on low-carbon growth areas.”

Malcolm Wrigley, Chief Operating Officer, CLP India, said, “As one of the super-critical plants in India, Jhajjar Power Limited has been a frontrunner in cleaner technology adoption. Our vision is making our operations sustainable and having a positive impact on the people living around our plants. While we will continue using state-of-the-art technologies at JPL to reduce carbon emission intensity, our primary focus in future will be to increase our investment in a clean energy portfolio such as renewable energy generation and transmission."

JPL has undertaken several measures that make it one of the leading producers of clean power in India. In addition to FGD, it has employed hybrid technology (electrostatic precipitator and fabric filter) that enables PM emission control; low NOx burners; and Secondary Over Fire Air (SOFA) systems for NOx reduction.

JPL is a ‘zero liquid discharge’ plant and the wastewater it generates is treated and reused within the plant premises for dust suppression, horticulture, cleaning and other suitable purposes. JPL has grown more than 350,000 trees in the plant premises, which act as another barrier to the fugitive dust PM emission.
