Classical music extravaganza begins in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The classical art aficionados were in for a profound sensory treat as the Delhi Classical Music Festival, highlighting the rich art and cultural heritage of the country, apart from showcasing the city's deep-rooted passion for indigenous art forms, started in the national capital. The five-day celebration of Indian classical arts began on a sombre note on Wednesday, as Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, while inaugurating the Delhi Classical Music Festival at Kamani Auditorium here, dedicated it to classical singer Girija Devi, who passed away recently. Mr Sisodia said, 'In a small tribute, we dedicate this music festival to Girija Devi. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and students.' Organised by Sahitya Kala Parishad, under the Department of Art, Culture and Languages, Government of Delhi, the cultural extravaganza, being held from October 25-29, aims to enlighten the denizens of the city with the immense wealth of authentic Indian talents and traditions that often miss the spotlight. The cultural experience for the art lovers, showcasing mesmerising glimpses of Indian traditional music and various performances by acclaimed artists, including eminent vocalists and instrumentalists, began this year's journey with a scintillating performance by Padmashri Parveen Sultana, well-known for singing Khayal, Thumri, Bhajan and Ghazal, in both traditional and contemporary styles. After enthralling the audience for about an hour, Padmashri Sultana said, 'It is a great feeling when people enjoy your work. That is the biggest acknowledgement and appreciation an artist can receive. 'I vouch for events by Sahitya Kala Parishad, since they are always well-organised,' the renowned singer told UNI. The second performance by Sarangi players of Moradabad Gharana - Murad Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan, took the audience to the dream world. The youth icons also mourned passing away of Girija Devi, saying 'Her absence will be missed profoundly, as there is no replacement. An artist like her comes once in 100 years. 'Sahitya Kala Parishad is doing a great job of combining legends with newcomers. The effort to revive the classical music, so that it does not die a silent death, is commendable,' said the new kids in the musical arena. Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Ranjendra Prasanna and Ajay Prasanna will present their celebrated talents today. Day 2 will also feature Delhi Ratan Awardee Akram Khan presenting his contemporary art in Tabla, followed by Bhuvanesh Komkali, Bahauddin Dagger and Prof M Venkatesh Kumar on Day 3. Pandit Madhup Mudgal, a brilliant composer of choral music, will take the stage on Day 4, followed by Nishad Bakre, an A-Graded artist of the All India Radio, who will enthrall the viewers with his rich style of rendition that combines the Gwalior, the Jaipur and the Agra Gharanas. Santoor maestros Abhay Sopori, representing the fabled Sufiana Gharana of Kashmir, with roots as old as 300 years, will take on the stage next, giving out his best performance. Day 5 line-up features unique artistic vocal skills of Pandit Jasraj, the versatile skills of Nitin Sharma from Kirana Gharana and finally the exceptional folk music by Ustad Shujaat Khan.
