Kohima Oct 19 (UNI) The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has seized huge quantity of firework items yesterday on the eve of ‘Diwali, the festival of lights’ in and around Kohima, which has created some contention among the section of people who are eager to celebrate the Diwali festival.

Talking to newsmen the KMC Administrator Kethosituo Sekhose said the seizures were made from those vendors along the stretch of the road without obtaining permit from its office; however the vendors were reportedly taken permission from the authority as it continued for years just before the Diwali festival in Kohima. Moreover, there was no any order from the Kohima Deputy Commissioner or the district Superintendent of Police on the ban of sale of fireworks. According to the KMC Superintendent Zakiekhotuo Kiso, due to the environmental factors the seizure of fireworks was carried out in the town. He said the air pollution generated from the burning of firecrackers and fireworks causes lots of health hazards. On October 9, India’s Supreme Court has temporarily banned the sale and distribution of firecrackers in New Delhi ahead of Diwali in a bid to control the escalating air pollution. According to experts, the extremely high levels of air pollution generated from burning of firecrackers and fireworks causes worsening of asthma, allergic diseases of the eyes and nose, respiratory tract infections, pneumonia and even heart attacks.
