class="K55Ut">India gives $15 million to Niger for AU summit

New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) India has extended a grant assistance of $15 million to Niger to help the country organise next month the African Union (AU) summit in its capital Niamey.
The AU Summit on July7-8 is expected to launch the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).


Ambassador Rajesh Agarwal symbolically handed over the grant assistance to Lamido Ousseini Bala Goga Salamatou, deputy foreign minister on Monday, the External Affairs Ministry said.
The grant assistance is a reiteration of India’s firm commitment towards Africa and would contribute towards enhancing of bilateral ties.
Relations between India and Niger have expanded significantly since the opening of the Indian Resident Diplomatic Mission in Niamey in 2009. India has provided Lines of Credit worth $96.54 million to Niger for projects in transport, electrification, solar energy and potable drinking water.

India is also setting up in Niamey the Mahatma Gandhi International Convention Centre (MGICC) under grant assistance. The Centre honours the memory of Mahatma Gandhi whose 150th birth anniversary is being observed in 2019.
The Centre is likely to host some meetings associated with the forthcoming AU Summit.
