Srinagar, Oct 17 (UNI) The security forces on Wednesday burst tear gas shells to disperse demonstrators protesting in some areas in downtown Srinagar against the killing of three militants in an encounter in the summer capital, Srinagar.
As the news about the death of three militants in an encounter with security forces at Fatehkadal spread across the city, scores of youth took to streets at various places in downtown Srinagar, including Khanayar, Baba Demb, Zaldagar, Fatehkadal and Karfali Mohallah.
However, when the protesting youth tried to take out protest rallies in their respective areas, security forces deployed there burst tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse them, who were pelting stone.
The protests were still going on in some areas when the reports last came in.
Meanwhile, about a dozen video and photo-journalists besides reporters -- representing local, national and international media houses -- were allegedly thrashed by security forces when they were covering an encounter in downtown Srinagar.
Three militants were killed in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the wee hours on Wednesday at Syed Ali Akar in Fatehkadal, downtown Srinagar. A Special Operations Group (SOG) jawan of state police was also killed while four security personnel were injured in the exchange of fire.
