Cinema isn't dead, it's very much alive: Ramesh Sippy

Kolkata 7 (UNI) Veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, the creative mind behind the timeless classic " Sholay", on Friday expressed his unwavering belief that cinema will never lose its magic.
"Cinema isn't dead, it's very much alive", Sippy declared with conviction, addressing a packed auditorium that hung on to every word. He emphasised that if one makes a good film, it will definitely pull audiences to the theatres.
Shedding light on filmmaking as "teamwork", he credited his entire crew for shaping Sholay's success.
Speaking about censorship during the Emergency era, 78-year-old Sippy said: "For the director, even one frame is very touchy. You cannot be overtly possessive about it because, like the censors at that time, the emergency was on; you could not argue."
He also touched upon Sholay's most poignant scenes like Imaam Saheb carrying his son's body. "It speaks miles, it’s very loud, and its expression takes it to the heights of drama in that sense, and mildly spoke, not shouting, because he’s just expressing his feeling."
He also recalled his early encounter with the world of cinema. "The first time I visited a set was in 1951, when I was seven years old. – I walked through the huge wires and everything on the set. It was dangerous to do that, you think now; at that time, as a kid, I didn’t. I was fascinated by the whole atmosphere.”
Looking ahead, Sippy expressed his keen desire to "craft a project with Bombay (now Mumbai) and Bengal. If we find the right kind of film, the right kind of subject, which would appeal to audiences. If it comes through, I’d be very happy and very willing to do that." UNI NST SSP
