CII IWN Goa to organise conference focusing on charismatic women in industry on Aug 30

Panaji, Aug 28 (UNI) CII Indian Women Network (IWN) Goa Chapter will organise a conference - ‘It’s Her’- focusing on charismatic women in the industry and their stories for empowering and inspiring Indian women on August 30, 2019.
According to a statement from CII Goa, Kalpana Unadkat, Chairperson IWN Western Region and Partner Khaitan and Co, Aslam Khan (IPS), Superintendent of Police, Commandant IRBn, North Goa, Nila Mohanan (IAS), Secretary, Education, Industries Trade and Commerce, Government of Goa, Sheetal Pai Kane, Director of Acoustic Components Pvt Ltd, proposed Chair for CII-IWN Goa Chairperson, Dr Nandita De Souza, Director, SETHU, and Parvish Andani Kamat, CII-IWN Past Chairperson and Founder of Anka Services and EDU180, will speak at the launch.
With the theme ‘Think Equal. Embrace Ambition. Empower Her’ the conference seeks to bring about a change in the attitude regarding women employees and women in leadership positions. Building a culture of inclusivity and equality is the only way to tap the huge reservoir of talent and fresh ideas that women represent. The participation of women in the industry has a critical role to play in economic growth and national development.
In India, women’s participation in the corporate scenario stood at around 25.9 per cent in March 2017. The latest National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) data for 2017-18, yet to be officially released, shows female participation in the workforce has declined further to 23.3 per cent. This is a surprising trend, as females have been outperforming their male counterparts in examinations for higher studies as well as competitive jobs. In 2018, the rate of unemployment among urban females was 27.2 per cent as compared to an unemployment rate of 18.7 per cent among urban males. This negative trend is alarming and there is an urgent need to halt its progression.
A woman’s access to safe work with decent remuneration is both an economic imperative as well as a primary human right. The under participation of Indian women in paid employment is not due to their lack of will. Indeed, the participation of educated, capable women in the workforce makes for a strong economic argument: the International Monetary Fund (IMF) finds that India’s GDP will increase by as much as 27 per cent if women participated in the economy at the same rate as men.
With rapid digitization and changing norms of interaction at the workplace, the time is right to bring about a change in the socio – economic norms governing the participation of women in the industry. The mere institutionalization of benefits such as flexitime for working mothers, increased maternity leave of 26 weeks and voluntary paternity leave has yielded no real benefit to working women. These provisions have in fact added to the prejudice that the industry has against employing women, as the brunt of this has to be wholly shouldered by employers.
With an increase in the number of unconventional career paths open to women today, it is only lack of awareness and support that is holding them back. All over the country women are breaking stereotypes and carving their way to success. We see women in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police force et al. Careers like engineering, sports, design and politics all hold great potential to provide employment to India’s women, the statement added.
