Chopper scam: Khaitan, travel agent, Aeromatrix CEO grilled by CBI

New Delhi, May 10 (UNI) Four people -- two businessmen, one travel agent and lawyer Gautam Khaitan -- were today grilled for hours by the CBI at its headquarters in connection with the ongoing probe in Rs 3600 crore controversial AgustaWestland deal. Official sources said RK Nanda, a Delhi-based travel agent, told the sleuths that he and deal middleman Christian Michel had set up a dummy export company 'EXIM' and that around Rs 6.5 crore were received from Michel’s Dubai-based company 'Global Service' under the grabs of exports. Probing the money trail of alleged kickbacks received in the VVIP helicopter deal, the agency is investigating what was the role of the Nanda's company that time. The sources said the money received in 'EXIM' was allegedly disposed of by investing money in real estate. Apart from EXIM, another company of Nanda 'Supreme Airways' was used to buy tickets for Michel and other contacts. Around Rs 12 crore worth ticketing business was conducted, the sources said, adding that probe was on to find the end point of money. On Khaitan, one of the accused in the helicopter deal, the sources said he remained 'evasive' during questioning. He had earlier admitted to having received money for the deal from middlemen Carlo Gerosa and Guido Haschke. Asked about purpose of taking the bribe, Khaitan's answer was not 'satisfactory', sources had said. The CBI also grilled Pratap Agarwal, MD of IDS InfoTech and Aeromatrix CEO Praveen Bakshi at its headquarters in connection with the ongoing probe in the 'Chopper scam.' The two MDs were questioned about the nature of services provided by their respective companies to AgustaWestland, CBI sources said, adding that both have been called by the agency tomorrow as well. IDS InfoTech Ltd (India) and Aeromatrix India have been booked by the CBI in the 2013 FIR in the case. Former Air chief SP Tyagi was also yesterday grilled by the CBI on the inflow of foreign remittances in his account in 2009 which he received after retirement. The allegation against the former IAF chief was that he reduced flying ceiling of the helicopter from 6,000m to 4,500m which made AgustaWestland helicopter eligible in the race for the deal.
