China's top legislator warns against any steps towards independence by Taiwan

Beijing, May 29 (UNI) The chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee Li Zhanshu on Friday emphasized the importance of the Anti-Secession Law and called for vehemently opposing any action by Taiwan aimed to gaining independence.
Zhanshu, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, was speaking at a symposium at the Great Hall of the People on the 15th anniversary of the implementation of the Anti-Secession Law.
He described the law as an important component of the systems and institutions meant to uphold the "one country, two systems" and for promoting China's peaceful 'reunification'.
Li said that the forces advocating Taiwan's 'independence' have misjudged the situation and have seriously endangered the interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. He called for determined steps to contain any act of secession.
He claimed that Taiwan being part of China is a 'historical' and 'legal' fact.
