China, India to protect developing country status in WTO

Beijing, Aug 13 (UNI) India and China have agreed that the two countries should safeguard their developing country status and legitimate interests in the World Trade Organization.
Late last month, US President Donald Trump put pressure on the WTO to change how it designates developing countries. The US says countries such as China and India are unfairly getting preferential treatment and want them to give up their “developing country" status.
The issue figured in the talks here on Monday between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and External Affairs S Jaishankar.
"Both sides believe that they should safeguard their developing country status, and safeguard their rights of development and legitimate interests in the WTO," Xinhua said.
According to MEA statement, Jaishankar also raised India's trade deficit with China, saying it was a matter of concern.
He emphasised that the Chinese side should take steps to address this issue by enabling greater access for our pharmaceutical and IT products and services in the domestic Chinese market, the statement said.
