Cannes, May 19 (UNI) A film student from the University of Chile has bagged the Cinefondation Prize at the 71st Cannes film festival.
'The Summer of the Electric Lion' by Diego Cespedes was chosen as winner among 17 short films from film schools around the world. The second prize was shared by Russian movie 'Calendar' and Chinese flick 'The Storms in Our Blood'.
'Calendar' is directed by Igor Poplauhn from Moscow School of New Cinema, while Shen Di, a student of Shanghai Theatre Academy, directed the 'The Storms in Our Blood' .
The third prize went to 'Inanimate' by Lucia Bulgheroni, a student of National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom.
The winning films were part of the Cannes festival's Cinefondation section to discover new talent in cinema. The winner of the first prize is guaranteed selection of their first feature film in the Cannes festival.
The winners were selected by a jury headed by French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello. The Cinefondation section received 2,426 entries from 512 film schools across the world this year.
Last year, India was represented in the Cinefondation section by Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) student Payal Kapadia. 'Afternoon Clouds' by Kapadia was the first FTII entry in Cannes.
The first prize at Cinefondation carries a cash prize of 15,000 euro (around Rs 12 lakh), followed by 11,250 euro (around Rs nine lakh) for second prize and 7,500 euro (around Rs six lakh) for third prize.
The Palme d'Or, the top prize at the Cannes festival, will be announced at the closing ceremony tonight.
