Chidambaram says BJP gov't bankrupt, clueless on reviving economy

Tiruchirapalli, Dec 8 (UNI) Hitting out at the BJP-led NDA government for the country’s economic crisis, senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday said “the BJP government was bankrupt and it is clueless on reviving the economy.”

“The country was in the grip of severe economic crisis and the government was clueless on reviving the economy. The government could not understand the magnitude of the crisis (economy). It had betrayed the massive mandate given by the electorate just seven months ago,” Mr Chidambaram said while speaking to media here.

He said no one would have dreamt of betrayal to such a level within a short span of time. The Indian economy was in very bad shape.

About 30 crore daily wage labourers engaged in agriculture and non-agriculture activities got an average of 22 to 23 days of employment before demonetization. The recent survey of the ‘National Sample Survey’ shows that the number of days of employment has come down to 12 to 15 a month, which means the annual income of daily wage labourers had shrunk by 50 per cent.

Similarly, the consumption level had also come down to 24 per cent. It had ultimately brought down the buying power of the people resulting in the fall of the economy.

Mr Chidambaram charged that the sole focus of the government was to give tax incentives to the corporate while burdening the common man with taxes. "Big corporate have been given tax incentives by forcefully getting Rs 1.5 lakh crore from the Reserve Bank of India," he said.
