Chennai experiences wettest day of the year during September in a decade

Chennai, Sep 19 (UNI) The Chennai city on Thursday experienced
the wettest day of the year as the teeming megapolis received a
record 108 mm of rainfall on a single day, as heavy rains lashed
several parts of the city and suburbs.
Met office sources said the Nungambakkam observatory recorded
108 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours ending at 0830 hrs this
morning, recording the highest volume of rainfall received on a single
day in the month of September over the past decade.
The city had earlier received 88.2 mm of rain on September 11, 2013,
which had so far remained the highest rainfall recorded on a single day.
Last ten year's statistics with the Met office showed that in 2016 the
second highest rainfall was recorded on September 29 when the city
received 82.3 mm of rain.
The city had received 35 mm of rain on September one in 2009,
43 mm on September 13, 2010, 62 mm on September 29, 2011,
53.3 mm on September 8, 2012, 88.2 mm on September 11, 2013,
33 mm on Sptember 6, 2014, 47.5 mm on September 10, 2015,
82.3 mm on September 29, 2016, 25.8 mm on Septemebr 19, 2017
and 26 mm of rain on September 17 last year.
The met office attributed the heavy rains to the presence of an upper
air cyclonic circulation off south Andhra Pradesh coast that aided
widespread thunderstorm activity across Chennai and neighbouring
districts.
The same pattern of rain was expected to continue for the next 24 hrs,
as light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over most
districts of North Tamilnadu and Puducherry and light to moderate rain
at a few places over most districts of South Tamilnadu.
It said heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over
Tiruvallur, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri,
Villupuram, Cuddalore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur,
Ariyalur and Salem districts during the next 24 hrs.
The steady rains, which began in the wee hours of today, continued for a
few hours, leaving several roads inundated in the city.
Traffic on several arterial roads moved at a snail's pace due to waterlogging
causing hardship to office-goers.
The rains were especially heavy in neighbouring Tiruvallur district, where the
Poondi and other reservoirs, catering to the water needs of the city, were located.
The rains brought cheers among the water managers as all the four reservoirs
got good inflow.
Tiruvallur recorded a maximum of 22 cm of rains during the last 24 hrs ending at
0830 hrs this morning.
It was followed by Poondi (21 cm), Arakkonam in Vellore district (17 cm),
Tamaraipakkam (15 cm), Sholavaram, Tiruvalangadu (13 each), Tiruttani
(12 cm), Ennore (11 cm), Chennai North (12 cm), Chennai City (10.8 cm),
R K Pettai and Gummidipoondi (10 cm each) and suburban Meenambakkam \\\\
(9.4 cm).
