Chandigarh capital issue: Why now? Why not when in power? SAD (T) asks Badals

Chandigarh, May 1 (UNI) Questioning SAD’s commitment over state’s capital issue, SAD (Taksali) on Wednesday questioned why the Akali’s did not restored Chandigarh to Punjab when they were in power.
The president of SAD (Taksali) Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, who is also the MP from Khadoor Sahib, said that five times chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had been demanding Chandigarh for Punjab when he was out of power and its political opponent Congress party was at the centre.
“However, when Badal had his government in Punjab and its alliance partner BJP was at the centre, they never raised the issue of Chandigarh only to placate the BJP,” he said.
For farmers’ distress, Mr Brahmpura blamed Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
“She claims to have 41 projects to her credit, but except a Kinnow processing factory in Fazilka, no other big project has been brought to the state,” he said.
The minister further said farmers have been left to grow wheat and paddy which do not increase their income. “If there is some fruit and vegetable processing unit in one or two districts, more areas can be brought under fruit and vegetables. It could save Punjab from drought like situation in future,” he said and added that it had led the poor farmers to commit suicides in the state.
Mr Brahmpura termed Modi government’s move to pay the small farmers Rs 6,000 annually as a “cruel joke”.
"It is an insult to the farmers. It amounts to Rs 16 per day which is too small to consider worth anything,” he said.
“The centre snatched Punjab’s precious water by digging up Rajashtan canal without any royality, but farmers from Punjab are not allowed to buy any agriculture land in Rajashtan,” he alleged.
“Whatever Punjab buys from other states, it has to pay royalty to them, but when Punjab's only 27 per cent land is irrigated by canal water, its water is being diverted to Rajasthan and Haryana. But Badal family chose to safeguard their personal interests and made some property deals over it ignoring the interest of state,” the SAD (T) chief said.
