Centre to give Rs 170 crore Meghalaya for National Games

Shillong, Nov 12 (UNI) The Union government has decided to provide Rs 170 crore to Meghalaya for developing sports infrastructure for hosting the National Games, 2022, Sports and Youth Affairs minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh said on Tuesday.
He said the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has decided to reduce the amount to Rs 170 crore only based on the conditions and requirement of fund.
It might be mentioned that Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot during his visit to Shillong last year, had declared that his Ministry would set up one of the five National Sports stadiums of international standard for differently-abled in Meghalaya at over Rs 200 crore.
The Meghalaya government has engaged the Hindustan Steel Corporation Limited (HSCL) as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) for building infrastructure for the National Games.
Lyngdoh said that detailed estimates and designs related to construction of the games village are being prepared by the PMC. By December, the PMC should be able to float tenders.
“ The state government is not sitting idle and we are determined to make the National Games happen in 2022,” he said.
As part of the preparations for the National Games, 2022, Lyngdoh said that Meghalaya Games will be held next month.
By organising this event, the government will be also able to scout talents in 14 disciplines which comprise both outdoor and indoor games.
The Meghalaya Games will be held tentatively from December 16 to 21.
