Mumbai, June 7 (UNI) NCP leader Supriya Sule on Wednesday slammed the central and Maharashtra governments alleging they were "not serious" about the safety of women or girls.
Sule's remarks came after the alleged murder of an 18-year-old girl at a women's hostel in Mumbai's Marine Drive. The absconding accused, a security guard at the same hostel, later is said to have committed suicide by jumping in front of a train.
On the other hand, the country's leading wrestlers over the past weeks launched an intense protest in the national capital Delhi and neighbouring states demanding the arrest and removal of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexually harassing women wrestlers. The central government has been facing criticism from opposition parties about its handling of the issue.
Sule, an MP, termed the attitude of the central and Maharashtra governments as "unfortunate".
She said the state government should take immediate steps by prioritising the security of hostels. There should be a helpline for the victms, while the hostels should have closed circuit cameras.
On the rising prices of pulses, Sule said "I am not surprised... as Parliament has been talking about rising food prices for two years straight. The central government does not have a steady policy,".
She said there was a shortage of onion in the world. "When there was a surplus of onion in Maharashtra, we were asking them to export onion, but they did not do it. Today there is no price for onion or other commodities. The backs of the farmers are literally broken. The prices of pulses have skyrocketed," she said.
On the tension in Kolhapur over a social media post, she said there was an overall atmosphere of tension in the state. She expressed fears that if the riots continue to happen, the state will be damaged.
Sule claimed it was the failure of the Home Ministry. People are now scared and divided, she added.
