Caste based census, a big challenge : Modi

Patna, Jan 25 (UNI) Admitting caste based census as a big challenge, Bihar Deputy Chief
Minister Sushil Kumar Modi today said that Bihar legislature had unanimously passed a
resolution but it is a difficult task.
While addressing a discussion on the book Caste and Social Capital, authored by a
former professor of IIM Bengaluru R. Vaidyanathan, Mr Modi stressed the need to make
the caste system relevant according to the age saying that the anarchy in this system
has taken its toll on it.
Referring to the socio-economic caste census held in between 2011- 13, Mr Modi said
that in this census 46 lakh caste were registered.
He said that eight crore anomalies detected during the census and after rectification
1.40 anomalies were still to be rectified.
As of these anomalies the census could not be published, he added.
During caste based census 1646 caste were registered in 1901 while 4147 were
registered in the census held in 1931. Such census could not be held in 1941 due
to the second world war.
Mr Modi said that the castes are divided into several sub castes and social evils have
percolated in the entire system as it is based on the birth and not according to the work.
Lots of people in various castes had applied to change their class after the first caste
based census held in 1871.
