Cape Verde secures first-ever World Cup spot

Beijing, Oct 14 (UNI) Cape Verde made history on Monday by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time after topping Group D in the African qualifiers with a commanding 3-0 home victory over Eswatini.
The win took Cape Verde to 23 points, sealing their first ever qualification at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a population of just over 500,000, Cape Verde is the second smallest country after Iceland to ever reach the World Cup finals.
The decisive moment in their qualification campaign came on the eighth matchday when Cape Verde upset Cameroon 1-0 at home. Despite a subsequent 3-3 draw with Libya delaying Cape Verde's qualification, the Blue Sharks held their nerve against Eswatini to secure their place in the finals.
