Campaigning ends in MP's 230 constituencies

Bhopal, Nov 26 (UNI) The din of campaigning across Madhya Pradesh's 230 assembly constituencies died down at 1700 hrs with expiration of the official time limit; the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the principal-opposition Congress and other parties put in all the energy at their command today.
Door-to-door canvassing is permissible as the state hurtles towards voting day – Wednesday on which the timings for exercise of franchise are 0800-1700 hrs barring three constituencies of Naxalism-affected Balaghat district where polling is to conclude at 1500 hrs. A total 2,907 candidates are trying their fortune, the number of polling centres exceeds 65,000 and the electorate is more than 5.03 crore. Results are scheduled to be announced on December 11.
Campaigning was intense for approximately the past fortnight. Premier Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah, Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister-cum-Madhya Pradesh's former Chief Minister Uma Bharati, Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other bigwigs drummed up support for the ruling saffron party.
From the Congress camp, its President Rahul Gandhi, state chief Kamal Nath, former Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot, Punjab Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and this state's former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh addressed numerous meetings.
Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati, her Samajwadi Party opposite number Akhilesh Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Development Minister Gopal Rai were also seen in action.

Mr Modi and other BJP leaders fired fusillades at the erstwhile Congress-led United Progressive Alliance dispensation's policies and blamed its “discriminatory” policies as a reason for improper development of Madhya Pradesh. The bigwigs did not forget to mention Mr D Singh's decade-long chief ministerial tenure that commenced in 1993 and reminded the populace of how the state's people longed for uninterrupted supply of power and water besides good roads. They emphasised the achievements of the Chouhan government and spoke of the manner in which the state is being taken forward on the development path through better implementation of central policies.
On the other hand, the Congress raked up “scams” perpetrated over the past one-and-a-half decades, appealed to the masses to bring about change and assured that work would be done for all segments after the party's regime was formed. Mr Gandhi and his satraps stressed that peasants' debt would be waived within ten days of their coming to power. Electricity-related benefits were also announced. These points are part of the Congress manifesto.
The saffron party is contesting all 230 seats whereas the Congress conceded Jatara to its partner Loktantrik Janata Dal.

These polls shall result in formation of the state's 15th Vidhan Sabha. The notification was issued on November 2, the last date for submission of nomination papers was November 9, scrutiny was conducted on November 12 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature was November 14
