Calcutta HC chief justice asks home secretary to file affidavit on Howrah court incident over parking

Kolkata, Apr 29 (UNI) The Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court today asked the state home secretary to file an affidavit by Tuesday on the clash between Howrah district court lawyers and Howrah Municipal Corporation employees on Wednesday last which left at least 20 people, including some lawyers, injured.

Chief Justice T B N Radhakrishnan also asked state government officials and Howrah district judges to appear before the court on Wednesday when the case would be further taken up for hearing.

He also urged lawyers to end their ceasework and return to their work.

The Chief justice on Friday registered a suo motu case on the incident after senior lawyers, led by Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya moved the bench expressing concerns over incident.

"The high court’s registrar general, the state’s chief secretary and home secretary, the director general of police, the Howrah police commissioner and the chief metropolitan magistrate of Howrah need to appear at the court during the proceeding," he observed.

More than 55,000 lawyers in the courts across the state have been on a cease-work in response to call of the state Bar Council to protest the incident.

The council would meet this evening to take stock of the situation and decide its next course of action.

The clash broke out on Wednesday over parking of the vehicles by lawyers on the Howrah Municipal Corporation premises across MG Road.
