Puducherry, Sep 11 (UNI) The Puducherry Cabinet has decided to name the 100 feet road from Indira Gandhi square to Rajiv Gandhi square after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Talking to news persons after chairing the Cabinet meet on Monday night, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said the Thirunallar by-pass in Karaikal region besides the PG centre there would be named after Karunanidhi. He added that a chair in his name would be instituted at the Pondicherry university.
Stating that the government has taken a decision to desilt all tanks, canals and channels in all the four regions of the Union territory, the Chief Minister said that the public who require sand for their house or field could collect it from the tanks and channels.
For this, a sum of Rs.50 would be charged for a bullock cart load of sand, Rs.100 for a tractor and Rs.150 for a lorry load. The amount would be given to the commune pacnhayats for its development, he added.
The Chief Minister said the people of Yanam region suffered a lot in the recent rain and an interim compensation of Rs.3000 to each families would be provided.
He said of the 32,500 families who obtained financial assistance under the Kamaraj housing scheme and 28,800 families had completed their houses. As 2949 families failed to construct houses and they will have to return the money obtained from the government along with a fine of Rs 3000, he said.
