C-Section deliveries surpass normal births at GMCH Nagpur, reveals RTI

Nagpur, Nov 11 (UNI) Data obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed a worrying trend at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, where the number of caesarean section deliveries has consistently exceeded normal births for the past three years.
According to the RTI report, the hospital recorded 4,349 caesarean deliveries and 3,663 normal births in 2023. The difference became more pronounced in 2024, with 4,162 C-sections compared to 3,342 normal deliveries. From January to August 2025, the pattern continued 2,027 deliveries were performed surgically, while 1,758 were normal births.
Medical professionals and public health experts have voiced concern over the rising preference for surgical deliveries at a government facility. “Such figures suggest the need for closer review of maternity care practices and stronger oversight to ensure caesareans are performed only when medically necessary,” said a senior gynaecologist.
