BRO driver killed in snow avalanche in Kupwara

Srinagar, Mar 4 (UNI) A Border Roads Organisation (BRO) driver was killed after a snow clearance team came under an avalanche in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, where many areas remained cut off for the third day on Sunday, due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.
Official sources said that dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the LoC, besides border towns of Karnah, Keran, Machil and Tangdhar, were cut off from Kupwara because of closure of these passes. ''Two to three feet of snow accumulated on these passes,'' added the sources.
They said a team of BRO was clearing a road at Pharkian in border town of Keran. However, the area came under a snow avalanche, which resulted in injuries to the driver of the JCB. The injured, identified as Amandeep Singh, was immediately taken to a nearby Army hospital, from where he was shifted to a hospital in Srinagar. However, Singh died on way to Srinagar.
The other two BRO workers were evacuated to safety, they added.
