London, Dec 13 (UNI) British Prime Minister Theresa May survived a vote of confidence in her leadership of Conservative party by a majority of 83, with 63 per cent of MPs backing her and 37 per cent voting against her.
As Ms May secured 63 per cent of the total vote, she is now immune from a leadership challenge for a year, BBC reported.
The no-confidence vote was triggered by 48 of her MPs angry at her Brexit policy.
Voting by secret ballot began at 6 p.m. local time (that's 1 p.m. ET) after the British Prime Minister, in a last-minute pitch to her MPs, promised to stand down as leader before the next scheduled election in 2022.
'A significant number of colleagues did cast a vote against me and I have listened to what they said,' Ms May said at the steps of Downing Street after winning a confidence vote by Conservative lawmakers.
Prime Minister May said the government’s mission was to “deliver the Brexit that people voted for, bringing the country back together and building a country that truly works for everyone.”
She said she would be fighting for changes to her Brexit deal at an EU summit on Thursday.
