Breast cancer is common among urban Indian women: Shilpa

Kochi, Apr 28(UNI): Pointing out that breast cancer was A common cancer amongst urban Indian women currently, Shilpa Lad, a leading specialised radiologist in Breast Imaging and Interventions has disclosed that as per the Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) breast cancer accounts for 25 per cent to 32 per cent of all female cancers in urban Indian cities, which pointed out that one fourth (or even approaching one thirds) of all female cancer cases were breast cancer.
The concerning fact for the Indian population was that for every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, one woman was dying of it, she told media last night.
Since more patients in India present at later stages, they do not survive long, irrespective of the best treatment they may get, and hence the mortality was fairly high, when compared with well developed countries like US, where according to her the number of patients were higher than in India.
