Braid chopping: Protests, clashes erupt at various places in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 6 (UNI) Protests and clashes erupted at various places in Kashmir, including summer capital, Srinagar, against alarming increase in braid chopping incidents in the valley.

Massive protests erupted at Natipora and adjoining areas in Srinagar, where braid of a woman was chopped by unidentified persons early this morning.

The angry protestors, who blocked the road leading to Nowgam bypass at Natipora, Aazad Basti and adjoining areas, fought pitched battles with security forces in the morning.

The locals again blocked the roads at Natipora in the evening following which security forces burst teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators, who were regrouping and pelting stones.

Scores of protestors at Gawkadal in civil lines clashed with security forces, who were withdrawing after enforcing curfew-like restrictions in the area since this morning.

Meanwhile, on the call of separatists, activities of both the factions of Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) hit the streets at Press Enclave to protest against braid chopping incidents in the valley.

However, security forces deployed in the area took several of the activities into preventive custody.

Reports of protests against braid chopping incidents also came from Soura in downtown Srinagar, Pantha Chowk and some other parts of the valley.

So far over 43 braid chopping incidents have been reported in the Valley. Many women have stopped going to morning and evening walks due to the scare of braid chopping in many areas in Kashmir.

The braid chopping incidents have witnessed increase despite authorities setting up helplines and announcing a number of other measures, including doubling the reward money to Rs 6 lakh for providing information.
