Boris Johnson with strong India connect is new UK prime minister

London, Jul 23 (UNI) Former foreign secretary Boris Johnson will take over as the next UK prime minister on Wednesday following his election as the Conservative leader.
Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt in a party ballot, winning 92,153 votes to Hunt's 46,656.
The former London mayor, who takes over from Theresa May, will be the first British prime minister with a strong India connection and has visited India on numerous occasions

His estranged wife, Marina Wheeler, whom he married in 1993, is half Indian.
Wheeler is the niece of well-known editor and writer Khushwant Singh.
“[Boris] loves India, and knows India pretty well through his marriage… Marina must have been a great asset to Boris in his political ascent to foreign secretary and, perhaps, now as Prime Minister,” wrote veteran journalist Rahul Singh, her relative, in a recent column.
In his victory speech, Johnson promised he would "deliver Brexit".
"We are going to get Brexit done on 31 October and take advantage of all the opportunities it will bring with a new spirit of can do.
"We are once again going to believe in ourselves, and like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy ropes of self doubt and negativity."
Johnson was foreign secretary until resigning from May cabinet over Brexit.
Hunt, the current foreign secretary, said he was "very disappointed", but Johnson would do "a great job".
EU Commission's Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, said he was looking forward to working with Johnson "to facilitate the ratification of the withdrawal agreement and achieve an orderly Brexit", reports BBC.
