Bombay HC decision awaited, CBFC clears 'Udta Punjab' under 'A' category with 13 cuts

New Delhi (UNI) The final judgement over the fate of controversial movie 'Udta Punjab' will be announced by Bombay high court today but the Censor board has already cleared the movie with 13 cuts under 'A' certificate.
CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani yesterday said, “We have today cleared 'Udta Punjab' under 'A' (restricted for adult audience) category after 13 cuts,”
Nihalini, who was facing criticism over suggesting a very large number of cuts said, nine members of the Central Board of Film Certification watched the film and “unanimously” cleared it, after the proposed 13 cuts.
“The CBFCs job is now over. It is now up to the producer to go to the court or tribunal. We will implement the order,” Nihalani told mediapersons at sideline of an event.
The CBFC’s revising committee had suggested a number of changes in the movie, which stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Diljit Dosanjh, and deals with the problem of drug addiction among youth in Punjab.
A string of changes proposed by revising committee includes removing a signboard mentioning Punjab and words like MLA, MP, Election etc.
The HC had on Friday said the makers of ‘Udta Punjab’ should tone down expletives and vulgar scenes as these alone cannot make a film work.
In sharp observations, the court asked the Censor Board not be overly-critical and said, ''people want to see mature stuff. Film industry is not a glass that needs to be handled with care. What's the point of making a film, if u cut most of the scenes''.
A division bench of Justices SC Dharmadhikari and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi disapproving over the CBFC’s direction to delete and cut references to 'Punjab' in the movie, has said, ''From every dialogue and scene of the film, if any reference to Punjab will have to be deleted, then the crux of the film will be lost. If the idea of the maker is to be critical of a place or person then that place or person will have to be shown."
In a stinging observation against the Board, the court further noted, ''If the movie (Udta Punjab) is glorifying use of drugs then ban the entire movie."
However, the filmmakers has agreed to delete one urinating scene and run a disclaimer that no actor in the movie support cuss words.
The Abhishek Chaubey-directed film is tentatively scheduled for release on June 17.
