Boat Capsize: 3 girls drown, 34 picnickers rescued

Palghar, Jan 13 (UNI) A boat ride of around 40 college students turned tragic on Saturday, when it capsized in sea off Dahanu coast in Palghar district, drowning three girl students.
The deceased were identified as Sonal Bhagwan Shurti, Jhanvi Harish Shurti (both aged 18) and Sanskruti Mayavanshi.
A group of around 40 students of the local Phonda Junior College, maximum of them girl students, set out on the trip after the college hours, at about 0930 hrs.
When the boat was halfway through, some of the occupants of the boat tried to take a selfie and shifted from their seats, as a result of which, the boat tilted on one side and capsized, BJP MLA Manisha Chowdhary, who hails from Dahanu, told this correspondent.
Local MP Chintaman Wanga, who reached the mishap site, told this correspondent that the alert students, realising the outcome, came up on the toppeled boat and remained there for some time.
The local fishermen and other locals rushed to the spot and rescued the students, who clinged to the edge of the boat.
According to the latest update from Dahanu, there were total 37 persons in the boat at the time of the mishap, out of them, three bodies had been fished out so far.
While, 34 others have been successfully rescued by the rescue teams and the locals.
Of the 34 rescued, only three, including the boat man and two girls, are presently being treated at the hospital, the reports stated.
Palghar resident District Collector Navnath Zare told this correspondent that a total of 21 were admitted to hospital, out of which three were still being treated, while others were discharged.
