Los Angeles, Mar 17 (UNI) Canadian wild card Bianca Andreescu will take on Germany's three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber in the women's singles final of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.
The Canadian has already made history at the prestigious tournament by becoming the first wild card in the tournament history to reach the women’s final but her job here isn’t done yet.
It will be Kerber’s first final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Despite having three of the ITF’s Grand Slams to her name (she’s just one Roland Garros title away from completing the Grand Slam sweep), she’s yet to win a WTA title of this caliber.
Andreescu is the first person to reach the final in her first time participating in the tournament since Serena Williams won it in 1999.
"When you have not the best results you are thinking about this, that you played so well in the last few year, and you are always trying to coming back stronger, but you have always the ups-and-downs, explained Kerber on the difficulty of backing up Grand Slam success with tour-level results.
"You cannot be on top the whole year playing the best tennis. But I’m always trying to finding a way to play as good as I can on [the] day," she added.
"She really played a great tournament so far. She beat tough opponents. She has nothing to lose. She will enjoy the final. Like me, I will also go out there and try to play like I played the last matches," Kerber said of Andreescu.
