Blinken, Jaishankar have 'good conversation' on democracy, fundamental rights

New Delhi, Jul 28 (UNI) The US and India on Wednesday had a “good conversation” on the issue of democracy and fundamental rights, with New Delhi stating that the "quest for a more perfect union" applies as much to the Indian democracy as it does to the American one, as to all democracies.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked whether he had raised the issue of “backslide in democracy” in India during his talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who said that the “shared democratic traditions, high ideals we set for ourselves, are very much part of our conversation. The relationship between our two countries is so important and so strong, because it is a relationship between our democracies and at its core it is a relationship of our peoples.”
“As friends we talk to each other about these issues, about the challenges that we both face. And I think humbly we can learn from each other, and no democracy however large or how old has it all figured out.”
