BJP will demolish all slums if it comes to power: Kejriwal

BJP will demolish all slums if it comes to power: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 12 (UNI) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sundya alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demolished numerous slums over the past 10 years, leaving over 3 lakh people homeless and claimed it will demolish all ‘jhuggis (slums)’ if it comes to power.
During a visit to the Shakur Basti Railway Slum Camp today, Kejriwal said, “As the Delhi Assembly elections draw nearer, BJP’s newfound affection for slum dwellers is becoming evident. BJP leaders, who haven’t cared for the slum residents in the last 5-10 years, are suddenly sleeping in the slums. This affection is not genuine. BJP, being a party of the wealthy, has no real concern for slum dwellers. For them, slum residents are nothing but expendable. They only want their votes during elections and their land afterward.”
Kejriwal further criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that during a recent event where slum residents were invited, Shah used the platform to hurl abuses at him.
“As the Home Minister of India, Shah holds a position of dignity and should maintain decorum in his words. However, he is free to say whatever he wants about me; I am in politics not for personal respect but for the dignity of the people and the country,” Kejriwal said.
The AAP leader also questioned BJP’s promise of "Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan" (homes where slums exist). He alleged, “BJP is not talking about homes for slum dwellers, but for their wealthy friends and builders. Their aim is to grab the slum land and hand it over to their friends.”
Highlighting BJP’s poor track record, Kejriwal claimed, “In the last 11 years, the BJP government at the center has built only 4,700 homes for slum dwellers in Delhi—3,000 in Kalkaji and 1,700 in Ashok Vihar. With over 4 lakh slums in Delhi, at this rate, it would take them 1,000 years to provide housing for all slum residents. They have no intention of building homes but are planning to demolish all slums within the next five years, leaving people homeless and on the streets.”
“They (BJP) have planned to demolish every ‘jhuggi’ in Delhi. Forget five years, they will demolish all ‘jhuggis’ within a year. If the people living in ‘jhuggis’ of Delhi vote for BJP, it will be akin to signing their own death warrant,” he alleged.
“They (BJP) will destroy the ‘jhuggis’ and seize all the lands. They have a project ready for every jhuggi, detailing to whom each piece of land will be given. They have already demolished ‘jhuggis’ in Tughlakabad, Mehrauli, New Delhi, Pragati Maidan, Nanakpura, Yamuna Pushta, Sangam Vihar, and Najafgarh. In the past 10 years, BJP has made 3 lakh people homeless in Delhi,” Kejriwal claimed.
Kejriwal challenged Amit Shah, urging him to withdraw all legal cases against slum dwellers within 24 hours. “Rehabilitate all those you’ve displaced to their original lands. If you do this, I won’t contest the election. But if you fail, I will contest and stand as a shield for these people. Let’s see how BJP demolishes their homes then,” he said.
“I entered politics as a common man to fight for people like these. If my actions can save their homes and lives, then my election candidacy doesn’t matter. However, if BJP doesn’t fulfill its promises, I will contest and ensure their rights are protected,” he asserted.
