BJP welcomes SC verdict on women officers getting PC in Army, says Cong opposed it

New Delhi, Feb 17 (UNI) Congratulating the country for creating a history by granting permanent commission to women in defence forces, BJP on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has supported the idea while it was the Congress government which has opposed it.

'I congratulate the country as we have created a history by granting permanent commission to women in defence forces. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has supported the idea of permanent commission for women and announced the change in policy in his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort in 2018, ' BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi said at a press conference here.

She said it was Congress government that argued vociferously against permanent commissioning of women in the army back in 2010 before the Delhi High Court.

The New Delhi MP said Mr Rahul Gandhi in his tweet has used derogatory language towards the government on the issue of granting permanent commission to women.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court, in a historical verdict, pronounced that all women officers shall be considered for permanent commission and will also be eligible for command posting on par with male officers.

In a tweet Mr Gandhi said the government disrespected every Indian woman, by arguing in the Supreme Court that women Army officers didn’t deserve command posts or permanent service because they were inferior to men. 'I congratulate India’s women for standing up & proving the BJP government wrong", he said in his missive.

Ms Lekhi said 'Only if he (Rahul) was aware of the facts that successive Congress governments filed affidavits before the courts arguing against granting the permanent commission, he would not have made those remarks.

She said, 'Mr Rahul Gandhi please click the refresh memory button. It was Congress government that argued vociferously against permanent commissioning of women in the army back in 2010 before the Delhi HC.'

'It was your government who challenged the decision before the Supreme Court which ruled in favour of women,' Ms Lekhi stressed.
