BJP-SAD alliance sweeps Chandigarh Mayoral polls; Arun Sood becomes new Mayor

Chandigarh, Jan 8 (UNI) Congress suffered a major blow albeit after a gap of 15 years when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) alliance wrested all the three top seats in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation's election held here today.
Alliance candidate for Mayor post and BJP Councillor Arun Sood has become new mayor of Union Territory of Chandigarh. He defeated his Congress rival Councillor Mukesh Bassi in straight fight by a margin of six votes. Out of the total 36 votes polled, Sood got 21, while Bassi secured 15 votes. Alliance wrested the seat from Congress.
BJP Councillor Devesh Moudgil declared winner for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor by defeating Congress candidate Darshan Garg with a margin of ten votes. Moudgil got 23 votes while Garg had to content with 13 votes. The Alliance retained the seat.
