BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya holds meeting with senior officials of Mohun Bagan and East Bengal on I-League imbroglio

Kolkata, Jul 12 (UNI) BJP's national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya today held a meeting
with senior officials of Mohun Bagan and Quess East Bengal, here, probably a follow up after six
top I-League clubs sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to save India's premier
football championship after AIFF proposed ISL ( Indian Super League) to replace the IL.
Six I-League clubs Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Churchill Brothers, Gokulam Kerala FC,
Minerva Punjab FC and Aizawl FC have jointly sought intervention of the Prime Minister to save I-League and the century old clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
The letter said the AIFF ( All India Football Federation) has been giving special preference to
ISL, a tournament sponsored by corporate giants.
The AIFF also proposed the Asian Football Federation that winners of ISL be treated to qualify
for Asian level football championship instead of IL, which has been getting such qualifying status.
It was not immediately known if Vijayvargiya, who is also in-charge of BJP for West Bengal,
held the meeting after the six clubs sought PM intervention.
Local BJP leader former goalkeeper Kalyan Chowbey had introduced his senior leader to the
officials of EB and MB before the meeting, which was held in a hotel here today.
While East Bengal was represented by Debobrata Sarkar and Shantiranjan Dasgupta, Srinjoy
Bose and Debashish Dutta represented Mohun Bagan in the meeting where Vijayvargiya assured
them that the will do his best on the controversial issue, sources have knowledge in the
development said.
Mohun Bagan's managing director Swapan Sadhan Bose on behalf of I-League clubs urged the
Prime Minister to “intervene and save the sport”.
" Recent media reports and press statements from the AIFF itself have indicated that the AIFF
is seeking to make the ISL, which came into existence in 2013, the senior most league in the
country, whereas I-League, that dates back to 2007 when it was launched as India’s first ever professional football league is sought to be made into a second tier and inferior league,” the
letter said.
