BJP hits out at Mamata's Dharna over SIR, calls it attempt to obstruct voter roll revision

Kolkata, March 6(UNI) The political confrontation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls intensified in West Bengal on Friday with the BJP sharply criticising Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for staging a protest at Esplanade.
Addressing the media at the BJP's state headquarters in Kolkata, former Rajya Sabha MP and senior party leader Swapan Dasgupta accused the Chief Minister of attempting to derail the electoral roll revision process initiated by the Election Commission of India. Dasgupta described the dharna programme as "politically motivated" and alleged that it was aimed at creating obstacles in the SIR process rather than safeguarding democratic interests.
According to him, the SIR is a constitutional exercise meant to prepare an accurate and transparent voter list by identifying and removing fake or fraudulent entries.
"The objective of the revision is to ensure that the electoral roll reflects genuine voters. However, attempts are being made to obstruct this process for political reasons," he said. The BJP leader also alleged that the protest by the chief minister was linked to attempts to legitimise illegal infiltration and protect what he described as "fraudulent voters".
He claimed that such efforts could undermine the integrity of the electoral system. Commenting on the broader political situation in the state, Dasgupta said that over the past fifteen years, the administrative structure and law-and-order situation in West Bengal had deteriorated considerably.
"Instead of the rule of law, the law of the ruler has effectively taken hold," he remarked, adding that this had weakened public confidence in governance and the justice system. Raising concerns over women's safety, he cited data from the
National Crime Records Bureau, claiming that a significant number of acid attack cases in the country are reported from West Bengal, while the conviction rate remains low.
Dasgupta further alleged that rising crime, political violence and corruption had adversely affected the state's social and economic climate. Referring to the alleged irregularities in the West Bengal School Service Commission recruitment scam, he said such controversies had damaged the image of the state and weakened the environment for investment and industry.
He also expressed concern over unemployment, claiming that the lack of adequate job opportunities had forced many young people from the state to migrate elsewhere in search of work.
Emphasising the importance of the SIR process, Dasgupta said the Election Commission requires cooperation from the state government to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.
Ensuring a proper revision of electoral rolls, he added, is essential for conducting free, fair and transparent elections.
