BJP and IPFT counter-violence puts question mark on coalition govt

Agartala, Jun 15 (UNI) The relation between two partners of the coalition government in Tripura suffered a fresh slump as BJP and IPFT leaders accused each other of perpetrating violence.
While BJP warned IPFT leaders to restrain their cadres, IPFT demands thread bare discussion on the situation to reach a reasonable solution.
Tension escalated in Gandacherra of Dhalai district of North Tripura as BJP and IPFT leaders indulged in counter-attacks last night. BJP MP Rebati Tripura accused IPFT cadres of attacking his house at midnight. However, tribal welfare minister of state and IPFT general secretary Mevar Kr Jamatia made counter allegations against BJP workers of attacking the houses of their two leaders.
Both the leaders accused police of not taking timely action against the perpetrators.
Jamatia alleged that BJP activists set an IPFT leader's house on fire, in Gandacherra. The police didn't reach the spot during the time miscreants were vandalizing his house and car, and abusing his family members.
BJP MP Rebati Tripura, in an FIR, alleged that a group of IPFT workers stormed his house at Durgapur area of Gandacherra between 11 pm and 12 am last night, and tried to set the house on fire. They attempted to assault the family members, targetted at Mr Tripura, but he escaped it as he was in Agartala.
Mr Tripura said the attackers warned the family members of dire consequence but the reason of their anger was not known. He got in touch with police authority in Agartala and SP (Dhalai), after he learnt about the brazen attack. The police reached his house at least after 45 minutes of the incident and by that time the criminals had escaped.
“Despite repeated attempts to contact SDPO Gandacherra and other police officials stationed their, I couldn't reach them as their mobiles were witched off. I must say it is a clear case of dereliction of duty. Such attitude of police is not acceptable and strong corrective measures are required for public safety,” Mr Tripura said, adding that the matter has been brought to the Chief Minister's notice and other leaders of the party.

According to reports, BJP supporters had taken out a victory rally in Gandacherra to celebrate Mr Tripura's victory in the Lok Sabha elections. After attending the meeting briefly, he left for Agartala, to attend party meeting in Delhi before the beginning of the Parliament session on Monday.
The trouble erupted out after he left the town.
Allegedly, IPFT workers assaulted Mr Tripura's associates and other local leaders of BJP. Charan Tripura, Subhankar Das and Vikash Chakma sustained severe injuries and had to be admitted to hospital and at night. Later, Charan's condition deteriorated and he had to be shifted to Agartala Govt Medical College in critical condition.
Meanwhile, IPFT general secretary Mevar Kr Jamatia alleged that BJP workers, taking part in the victory rally, attacked the house of party assistant general secretary and chairman of Ganganagar block Jibanjoy Reang's house last night. However, Reang escaped unhurt in the violence.
Later in the night, the same group came two vehicles attacked the house of another leader Prem Kumar Tripura. They have stolen the house and on Saturday morning in presence of police, his house was burnt down by the known miscreants, Jamatia said.
Later in the night, the same group of ruffians attacked the house of another IPFT leader Prem Kumar Tripura and looting the valuables, he alleged. In the morning the miscreants, set the house on fire, right in front of the police.
“We have convened the executive council meeting to discuss the present situation and if required we shall also call the BJP leaders to attend in the meeting. Because this is not the first time, it has been continuing since IPFT-BJP government was formed in the state last year. We shall also invite the Chief Minister for thorough discussion on the issues,” Mevar added.
