Biplab Deb elected new Tripura BJP chief

Agartala, Jan 7 (UNI) Former RSS volunteer Biplab Deb has been elected as president of state unit of BJP by state committee after election.
He has replaced Sudhindra Dasgupta, the longest serving president of the party, in the election held yesterday.
Mr Dasgupta had been the flag bearer of BJP for past five years when the party did not have any impact in Tripura politics.
He popularised the party at the village level, including Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the main base of CPI-M.
The BJP has emerged as a political force in the state politics in past five elections during his tenure. However, the party did not get his replacement for past many years.
After Prime minister Narendra Modi formed government at the Centre in 2014, the party sent Mr Deb from New Delhi.
Mr Deb, the RSS trained party worker, was born in Udaipur subdivision of south Tripura but had been educated at Delhi and spent the better part of his life in RSS headquarter at Nagpur.
According to party leaders, BJP's central leadership was keen to establish a solid political base in Tripura, taking advantage of the growing irrelevance of Congress in Tripura politics.
In the northeast, BJP's current priority is the assembly poll in Assam; whether the party comes to power or not, BJP will then turn its attention to Tripura for a good showing.
Ideologically, CPI (M) is BJP's major enemy and an effort will be made to weaken the CPI (M), so that the party go all out to ensure a good showing in the Tripura assembly polls, pointed out party’s outgoing president Mr Dasgupta, adding if all goes well, as planned the left front will not return.
