Bengaluru Turf Club seeks union government to lower GST on horse racing

Bengaluru, May 16 (UNI) After a lull during Summer, the Bengaluru Summer Meeting-2019 races will commence from May 18 as thoroughbreds are prepared to the prime and ready to enthrall the railbirds at BTC race cource here.
The season that last 26 racing days will be the first in the racing season of the Indian calender and will end on August 9.
Speaking to reporters BTC Chairman V Harimohan Naidu said The Turf Authorities of India and Bengaluru Turf Club had jointly appealed to the Union government to reduce Goods and Services Tax (GST) on horse racing from the present 28 per cent to a lower level. This had drastically reduced the tax receipts to the government repatriated from BTC, which paid the highest tax from tote collections to the government,
Giving example, Naidu said the wagering amount at the BTC counters in 2014-15 was at Rs 3274 crore, but it fell to Rs 1917 crore during 2018-19. ‘’As per our assessment, this may further fall to Rs 1438 crore in 2019-20 and Rs 1078 crore in the next fiscal,’’ he claimed.

The major season in the racing calender of the country in the new fiscal will offer a total stakes money of over Rs 19.5 crore.
He said nearly 50 trainers including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai based and Indian 'A" licensed and 'B' licensed at BTC 100 Jockeys are expected to participate during the meeting.
In all about 825 race ready horses including 98 outstation horses are stabled in the BTC stables and about 800 horses are expected to participate during the meeting as against 703 during the previous meeting.
The plum event, Kingfisher Ultra Derby Bengaluru (Gr-I) will be sponsored by M/s United Breweries for the 32nd year continuously. The added money will be Rs 1.5 crores inclusive of the club's contribution of Rs.75 lakhs and an equal contribution of Rs.75 lakhs by the sponsor. With the club guaranteeing a total stakes of Rs.2.5 crores, it will be one of the richest Derby race in India, he said.
Naidu said the Jockeys fitness test from this year will be conducted by the officials of Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru Southern centre, and this will be a prerequisite to the licensing procedure.
In feature days the BTC that good condition valid tickets shall not be accepted for cancellation at central computer room, he said.
