Bengal remembers R D Burman on his 22nd death anniversary

Kolkata, Jan 04 (UNI) Legendary music composer Rahul Dev Burman popularly known as Pancham da is remembered by his fans on his 22nd death anniversary today. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered the legendary composer on the occasion. “Fondly remembering the legendary Rahul Dev Burman on his death anniversary,” Ms Banerjee tweeted. Burman, one of the most beloved composers of Bollywood, died on January 4, 1994 at the age of 54. He was a musical genius whose experiments and innovations made him one of the most beloved musicians of his time. He gave the Hindi film industry an imperishable treasure trove. It has become more of a ritual that on Pancham da's death anniversary a tribute is paid in his memory by running his favorite songs during the day and by obtaining the quotes of the present day music professionals who still are under the sedated influence of his musical miasma. Euphony, a Kolkata based R D Burman foundation, established by some die-hard fans of the legendary music director whose primary objective is to spread the acoustic effect of Pancham’s music even after twenty-two years of his demise, organises unique musical shows to remember Burman on his death anniversary. “Pancham Da has been idolised by several music composers and his music has been described as one featuring multicultural influences, and characterised by frenetic pacing, youthful exuberance and upbeat rhythms," said one of the founder members of Euphony. "Even today after 22 years of his demise, music composers and singers try to emulate his melody and rhythm. With his team of musicians and two leading singers we are offering our humble tribute to the greatest composer ever on his death anniversary,” he said. Son of the legendary music director Sachin Dev Burman, Rahul started his journey with Chhote Nawab (1961). After that, he brought a refreshing change with his extraordinary compositions like Raat kali (Buddha Mil Gaya), the sensual cabaret number Piya tu ab toh aaja (Caravan), the ultimate hippie anthem Dum maro dum (Hare Rama Hare Krishna) and the classical Raina beeti jaaye (Amar Prem). Burman was nominated 18 times at the Filmfare Awards in the Best Music Director category. Of these, he won thrice for Sanam Teri Kasam (1983), Masoom (1984) and 1942 A Love Story (1995). Incidentally, he won his last award posthumously. He has scored music for over 300 films in various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. UNI BM AD1452
