Kolkata, Nov 23 (UNI) To bring the far-flung villages of Bengal into the banking network, the West Bengal Government has decided to empower cooperatives in such villages to act as banks.
These ‘banks’, which the government has decided to name as customer service points (CSP) would be under the State Cooperation Department, and not the Reserve Bank of India. Lakhs and lakhs of people would be benefitted as a result.
According to senior government officials, a decision has been taken to open 2,631 CSPs for now, for which purpose the Cooperation Department has allocated Rs 1,000 crore.
