Bengal Govt takes serious note of Bhatpara clashes; Directs ADG (South Bengal) to take charge of Barrackpore division

Bengal Govt takes serious note of Bhatpara clashes; Directs ADG (South Bengal) to take charge of Barrackpore division

Kolkata, Jun 20 (UNI) The West Bengal Government today took serious view of the clashes at

Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas, where two persons were killed in clashes, asking ADG (South

Bengal) Sanjay Singh to take charge of troubled Barrackpore division.

Section 144 Cr Pc was clamped for an indefinite period at Bhatpara, where clashes happened for about 90 minutes between two rival gangs from 11 AM in which bombings and firing happened at random.

Two youth, Rambabu Shaw and Dharamvir Shaw, were killed and five others sustained serious wounds and were admitted to different hospitals.

Of the injured, condition of four was stated to be very critical.

Ram Babu Shaw was a seller of golgappa or phuhka. He was in the market to buy raw materials. Family sources said Ram Babu Shaw was hit by bullet on his head.

BJP's Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh said they were killed in the police firing.

Eyewitnesses and local residents claimed that the two were killed in the police firing.

They said police first lobbed teargas canisters, charged lathis and then resorted to firing.

Local people alleged that the miscreants fight regularly in the area of Kankinara, Bhatpara under Jagaddal police station and the administration failed to bring the situation under control. They said the common people have been in panic for the past 32 days since May 19.

Police denied this, saying they fired in the air. Police said some 10 to 12 policemen were injured and the ACP car was vandalised.

The trouble cropped up before inauguration of the Bhatpara police station today, a bifurcation of Jagaddal police station, following unabated violence since May 19, the last day of Lok Sabha poll.

BJP wrested power in both Barrackpore Parliamentary and Bhatpara Assembly seats.

The opening of Bhatpara police station was postponed.

State Home Secretary Alapan Banerjee told reporters at Nabanna that the government has taken the Bhatpara situation very seriously, where Section 144 has been imposed and ADG (South Bengal ) Sanjay Sigh asked to take charge of the area with immediate effect.

A high level meeting was held at Nabanna to take stock of the situation.

Mr Banerjee said DGP Virender was on way to Bhatpara.

BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya blamed the Mamata Banerjee administration for the current "chaotic" state of affairs in West Bengal.

He claimed police firing led to the death of two youth at Bhatpara, where the BJP parliamentary team will visit and report to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
