Bengal governor welcomes Calcutta University's decision to confer Hony. D.Litt. on the Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee

Kolkata, Jan 24 (UNI) West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, also the chancellor of state universities, has welcomed Calcutta University's decision decision to confer the honorary
D Litt (honoris causa) on Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee at its annual convocation which will be held on January 28.
"Calcutta University's decision to confer Hony D.Litt on Dr Abhijit Banerjee has been acclaimed all around. By any standards he is eminently deserving of it. January 28, the day of conferment of this honor on him would indeed be a joyous, satisfying moment for all in the State and we need to live up to our high cultural traditions," said a statement issued by Raj Bhavan.
"Let us all be in congratulatory and celebratory mode on the momentous occasion of honoring the distinguished son of the soil Dr Abhijit Banerjee," said the governor.
"Thinking beyond history, culture and time is the forte of Bengal’s mindscape. Bengalis time and again have led the way for countrymen. Dr Abhijit Banerjee accomplishments are the latest noteworthy in this regard, said Mr Dhankar," the statement read.
The Nobel committee has rightly recognized Dr Abhijit Banerjee's contribution in the field of Economics and path breaking research methodology. This conferment has evoked all round appreciation, he added.
"The well thought out and laudable decision of the University of Calcutta to award him with Hony D.Litt is a gratifying moment for all of us in the State as also in the Country. I am privileged and honoured to be associated with the decision as Chancellor of the Calcutta University," he said.
Dr Abhijit Banerjee's contributions in the field of poverty alleviation through experimental approach in obtaining reliable solutions to fight poverty are need of the hour for the well being of humanity. Their
contemporaneous relevance can never be over stated, Mr Dhankar opined.
For a diverse country like India and for a densely populated state like West Bengal, the methodology of framing manageable questions will greatly benefit educational outcomes, child health and address issues for people who are most affected, he noted.
"As the Chancellor of the leading top educational institute of the land I congratulate the legend. I am humbled by his accomplishments. It is a moment to cherish by all of us and particularly by me being
the First Governor of the State of West Bengal born in Independent India," the statement added.
His research and thoughts will inspire coming the generations of the country, he added.
"Like many others, I am looking forward to read his book 'The State of Economics, The State of the World', which addresses ongoing challenges to economics in theory and in practice in a time of crisis.
As the Chancellor I applaud and bow to your accomplishment. Your research and thoughts will inspire the coming generations of the country," he said.
