Bengal: EC likely to publish 'no-mapping' voters list alongside 'logical discrepancies'

Kolkata, Jan 20 (UNI) A day after the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to publish the list of voters in West Bengal with logical discrepancies, there are strong indications that the poll body is likely to make public the list of "no-mapping" or unmapped voters.
Sources in the Commission indicated that voters who fall under the categories of "no-mapping" and "logical discrepancies" have already been called for hearings.
Sources in the Commission pointed out that the Supreme Court’s order specifically mentions the disclosure of the list of voters with "logical discrepancies".
However, in addition to complying with that direction, the Commission has decided to place the "no-mapping" voters’ list in the public domain as well.
According to sources in the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office, the lists are already available with the district magistrates-cum-district election officers and the electoral registration officers (EROs).
The lists will be published once the Commission issues its formal guidelines.
Sources in the Commission indicated that West Bengal has 31,68,426 no-mapping voters, while 94,49,132 voters have been identified with logical discrepancies.
In total, notices have been issued to nearly 1.40 crore individuals in the state for document verification.
These notice recipients have broadly been classified into three categories — mapped voters whose names are linked with the 2002 Special Intensive Revision (SIR), unmapped voters whose names are not linked with the 2002 SIR, and voters with logical discrepancies.
The issue has arisen in the context of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls in the state.
During a hearing on Monday, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to publish the list of voters with logical discrepancies.
The apex court issued a detailed 10-point set of guidelines in this regard on Tuesday.
According to sources in the Commission, February 7 has been fixed as the last date for hearings, while the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 14.
However, sources in the Commission indicated that the hearing period may be extended, though no final decision has been taken yet.
It was also indicated that the date for publication of the final list could be deferred.
Sources in the commission said that guidelines in line with the Supreme Court’s verdict will be issued on Wednesday, following which further clarity on the revised schedule is expected.
