Banking services hit as unions call for day-long strike

Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Oct 22 (UNI) Business and other commercial activities in the Marathwada region were hit on Tuesday with five lakh bank employees across the country going on a day-long token strike on Tuesday in protest against the mega merger announced by the Centre.



All the public sectors banks, private banks and foreign banks are participating in the agitation.

At least 40,000 banks branches across the country and 350 in Marathwada region remain closed due to the strike, Com Devidas Tuljapurkar, general secretary of Maharashtra State Bank Employees Federation told UNI.

Bank employees held demonstrations in front of Bank of Maharashtra at Kranthi chowk here raising slogans against the central government .

In the region the banks employees are protesting at their respective centres.

Already the government has effected merger of associate bank with SBI and Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda and in the process around three thousand bank branches have been closed and if this merger takes place another two thousand bank branches will be closed, he alleged.

On the one hand the government is closing small banks while at the same time small finance banks in Private sector are being issued licenses and in the process banking business is being privatized, he pointed out.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai all employees are assembling at Azhad Maidan, Mr Tuljapurkar added.
