Bangladeshi youth arrested with arms in Tripura

Bangladeshi youth arrested with arms in Tripura

Agartala, Sep 29 (UNI) A Bangladeshi national has been arrested with two 9mm pistols and four magazines at Nutanbazar of Amarpur in Gomati district while returning after procuring the arms reportedly from here.

The accused youth is identified as Anumoy Chakma, a resident of Bagapara village under Khagrachari district of Southern Bangladesh. However, he had married an Indian girl from Bhagabantilla village of Korbok in Amarpur and has been a regular visitor of Tripura without passport, police claimed.

During interrogation, Anumoy revealed that he had procured the pistols and magazines from a person in Agartala for another person named Bakulmoni Chakma, a trader by profession in Khagrachari. But police has refused to detail the procurement and reason of carrying it for other person and stated that investigation is going in right direction to reach the kingpins of the arm smuggling network, said a police official.

According to police, the accused youth was boarded in a small passenger vehicle from Agartala with the arms but he broke the journey at Udaipur and changed the vehicle, which was also known to police. He was travelled by a bus to Korbok, which was stopped on the road by police and conducted search inside but could not able to find anything.

“Two police officers boarded in the bus and seated near to Anumoy after conducting search in civil dress and others were following the bus from behind. After sometimes, police cordoned the bus before reaching Amarpur and detained Anumoy and recovered the pistols and magazines from his possession,” said police.

The investigation is progressing to detect the arms smuggling network active in the state, police added.
