Bangladesh seeks China's support for Rohingya repatriation

Bangladesh seeks China's support for Rohingya repatriation

Dhaka, Jun 25 (UNI) Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday sought China’s support to convince Myanmar to start repatriation of displaced Rohingyas from Bangladesh at the earliest.

Momen made the urge when Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Zuo called on him at foreign ministry here, Bangladesh foreign office said in a statement.

The foreign Minister mentioned that Bangladesh is ready to send back the Rohingyas who are in the verified list.

The Chinese envoy underlined the importance of strengthening communication channels between Bangladesh and Myanmar for finding solution of Rohingya crisis.

Ambassador Zhang also briefed the foreign minister about his recent visit to Rohingya camp.

They shared their views on the role that Myanmar should play to create congenial atmosphere so that Rohingyas feel secured for their repatriation and resettlement in Rakhine state, the statement read.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to visit Beijing next week where the Rohingya issue has been set as a major agenda to discuss.

Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar district and most of them had arrived there on August 25, 2017 -- after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which United Nations termed as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing" and genocide by other rights groups.
